II. Objectives

  • Analyze classroom scenarios that teachers may experience
  • Examine the scenarios from various perspectives as related to classroom management in a technology rich environment
  • Consider solutions and outcomes

III. Groupings

For this activity you will form groups of 5. You will obtain a card that will determine the role you will play in this activity. It is important that you stay in this role and that others know of your title.

IV. Activity

  • After forming your group, a member at the table should choose one scenario from the links below.
  • When asked to do so, choose either Scenario 1, Scenario 2, or Scenario 3 to analyze as a group.
  • The superintendent (identified by the hat) should read the scenario aloud to the group.
  • Next, each member of the group should analyze the scenario based upon their unique identities and roles within the school community. The roles within the group are: superintendent, principal, assistant principal, IT director, itf, and teacher. A group discussion should commence- led by the superintendent at the table. Do not simply go around the table giving your opinions, but instead challenge each other regarding your opinions and try to come to a common consensus regarding how to resolve the issue. Remember you are looking at each scenario through the lens of classroom management in a 21st century learning environment.
  • At the end of the session, we will small and large group discussion.

You may want to analyze the scenarios using the following guiding questions. From your viewpoint (identity) consider:
  • What feelings are triggered upon learning of this scenario?
  • How does traditional classroom management differ or remain the same in this scenario?
  • What biases or personal opinions separate from any district/school policies do you bring to the table?
  • How could district/school resources be used to help the teacher in this situation?

Within your discussion, take note of how your role is intersecting with the scenario(s). Later you will record these.

VI. Salient Points

  • In a 1-to-1 classroom, the best curriculum, teacher, etc. will be wasted if there isn't sufficient classroom management!

  • What does good classroom management look like?
--It can be messy....control when the students will be using their laptops
--It doesn't matter what kind of monitoring software that is used; the best "soft-wear" is a soft pair of shoes! ("Sneakers"!)

  • You have to fail before you succeed...don't be afraid to fail...that is how you learn what strategies work!

  • Effective teachers take risks and move beyond their comfort levels...administrators. please back them if they are within the established standards!
